Instrument Windows
Plastic substrates are an excellent alternative to glass for instrument windows, being light in weight, easily processed and giving high impact resistance. In general, acrylics and polycarbonate offer the best alternatives to glass. Benefits include:
  • range of materials and finishes available
  • clear hard-coat and/or non-glare finish available
  • windows cut from coated sheet eliminating variations which apply to dip or spray coatings of mouldings
  • colour-tinted materials can be provided if required
  • easy to change print design or profile
  • screen printing on panel sizes up to 500 mm x 300 mm
  • high quality, low unit cost
  • good colour density
  • Multi-colour design
  • Windows routed to accuracy ± 0.07 mm
  • Positional registration with print ± 0.15 mm
  • Supplied cleaned, checked on low tack or pre-cut gasket sheets
  • Low initiation costs for any design
  • Short lead times

Materials

We are able to produce machined windows from either acrylic or polycarbonate sheet.
The principle advantages and benefits of each are outlined below:

Acrylic

  • Very good quality cast sheet with excellent optical qualities
  • Available in a good range of standard thicknesses, and any thickness can be made to order. (ie: We use 0.8 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm and 3.0 mm and 1.2 mm).
  • Coatings, both clear hard-coat and non-glare are of excellent and very uniform quality.
  • Material has good surface hardness even without coatings and is therefore easy to handle and clean.
  • Good range of tinted colours as standard, again, anything available as a special.
  • Printing and machining properties are very good.

KRD Polycarbonate

    • based on standard extruded Makrolon or Lexan PC sheet.
    • coatings are flow coated and are of good quality - much better than that generally available in spray-coated form
    • PC has a much better impact strength than acrylic
    • PC without coatings, has low scuff resistance, which leads to handling difficulties
    • PC can be ITO coated without extra treatment
    • PC has some fire retardancy, even in thicknesses less than 3 mm, which acrylic does not
    • Lower cost than comparable acrylic materials, but after printing plus higher machining cost the price advantage is less marked.
